Young Chicago Authors presents Chicago Annual of Style at the Metro

Young Chicago Author’s First Annual of Styles was a truly different event in all the best ways. Hosted by emcee/poet/historian Kevin Coval, the night was a multidiscplinary event celebrating all things Chicago, teaming up poets and rappers from the ranks of YCA and Louder than a Bomb with musicians and dancers that you’d rarely see sharing a stage, whether it be b-boy Bravemonk doing a liquid, interpretive dance to a poem by Kush Thompson, accompanied by cellist Hope Shephard or the Chicago Steppers getting down to Lamar Jorden’s dark-but-hopeful recapping of the Chicago experience past and present. If it sounds like it wouldn’t work on paper, then that’s about right, but if it sounds like it didn’t, then I’m not telling it right, because something truly unique and magical was created. Old friend and Chicago expatriate Itch13 spun a perfect eclectic set of music and the night capped off with a performance by The O’My’s, featuring one of my favorite voices and one of my favorite horn sections in Chicago right now.
