Chicago Cinema Society presents Santa Sangre
Posted on December 20th, 2011 by admin
This event was a treat for us, because it was so different from what we usually do. Chicago Cinema Society held their first big public event at the Portage Theater, showcasing weird-as-fuck, Spanish-language arthouse cinema, including Alejandro Jodorowski’s “Santa Sangre” (show in an original 35mm print for the first time in Chicago in over 20 years), Alex de la Iglesia’s “The Last Circus” (an uber-violent visually beautiful movie about circus clowns pushed to the edge in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil war that Quentin Tarantino has been bringing a lot of attention to recently), and Bobby Yeah, a stop-motion short full of blood, teeth, fingernails, animal heads, genitalia, and enough nightmare fuel for weeks. Check out the “Bobby Yeah” trailer to see what I mean.
To round it out, the Chicago Cinema Society brough in flamenco musicians and salsa dancers who played sections of Santa Sangre’s score, and shook some serious tailfeather to it, and us, with our messed-up-circus photobooth, full of weird props specifically made for the occasion.
