The Black and Brown Punk Show: Drag Edition
Posted on August 21st, 2011 by admin
The 2nd Annual Black and Brown Punk Show was our favorite kind of clusterfuck, which is to say that it was a lot of great ideas that wouldn’t necessarily mesh on paper, thrown together for a good cause. At it’s core, the event was a punk show, highlighting bands with a majority of black and brown members. Of course, in addition to punk, there was everything from DJs spinning disco, Yva Las Vegas singing and playing bilingual riot folk on a ukelele, and there was L-Tronika, whose music was a mix of synthpunk, disco, hip hop, and traditional Mexican music. Then on top of the music, there was the drag theme, which coincided with the cause the show was benefitting, which is a fundraiser for CeCe McDonald, a transwoman being treated unfairly in prison after being arrested for a crime of self defense.
On top of that was the space, The Orphanage, an old church space that isn’t really a church anymore but is is run by, apparently… some down-ass new agey type Christians. It was a great show with a mix of locals and out of towners and a dozen different flavors of hardcore punk in a handful of different languages. I finally got to see Por Mi Culpa from here and Atruth from Brooklyn, and some decent money was raised for Cece’s family.
