We In the Midwest: mixtapes and mixtapes and mixtapes from Chrissy Murderbot

Posted on November 8th, 2009 by eric

Chrissy Murderbot is on some other level shit, and perhaps beyond that. He was talking about dubstep and glitch and fidget before anybody else (that I knew) in this city, and he was spinning dnb after everyone else dropped it for not being that marketable. He’s one of those guys that kills it all over town on a regular basis, and nobody realizes it but his friends and some hardcore music nerds, and then goes international and blows up. Case in point: He just got back from Europe, where he’s been bouncing around on tour for the last couple months, to play the last ever night of the monthly dubstep party Bass Goes Boom.

A couple months back, he decided to become the Nathan Rabin of dance music, by releasing one mixtape a week for an entire year on the blog My Year of Mixtapes. I’m glad to see that the project didn’t fizzle out, like most blogs do in their first couple months, especially under the wight of touring and releasing an album. The open something-a-week format is a good one, as it allows him to experiment, get really specific, get really specific, and to just plain show off (cmon, man Belgian Rave 1991? A mix of Bobby Orlando followed by a mix of songs ripped off BY Bobby Orlando?Toponyms?)

Highlights (for me) include a mix of songs sampling Kraftwerk, a two-part mix of Philly soul and Philly disco, German new wave, summer anthems, Steppas reggae, Booty Music and Jack Trax, New Jack Swing, and Robot Love.

The blog has a little bit of something for everybody. While I love me some Hi-NRG, I have no interest in Happy Hardcore. There’s a lot of heavy Euro shit and a lot of regional shit from the Midwest. This is a great project, and I’m excited to see what directions it might go in as the year goes by.
