Bitchpork

For the second year in a row, Bitchpork Fest provided an amazing, Southside alternative to Pitchfork Fest in Union Park. One of my biggest problems with Pitchfork (and most outdoor festivals) is that they almost always make the most aggresive bands (whether it’s aggressively dance-y or aggresively thrash-y) and artists go so early. I mean, this makes sense, the more aggressive you are the less mainstream (and even mainstream indie) appeal you’re going to have, and the bigger a band is the later you’re going to perform, but this means that I’ve had to see acts like Deerhoof and Death From Above 1979 and Matt + Kim and Cave (who played both Bitchpork and Pitchfork this year) in the middle of the day when the sun is highest in the sky and the heat is just sapping all the energy from everyone and only the hardest core fans are dancing.

Conversely, Bitchpork is all noise and thrash and avant garde art and psychedelic fuzz. When I got to Mortville, a converted granary has also been home to Weiser House, Treasure Town, and Fort Kakalak, and a million nameless raves before that, I was privy to a performance that I can only describe as a Kylie Minogue video directed by Jodorowsky, as one girl stripped the clothes off another and stapled pages of Swank to her as bubblegummy electropop played.

I was lucky enough to shoot the first night of Bitchpork, which featured prformances by some of my favorites (TomTomTomBoy, Cool Memories, and Beau Wanzer) along with a lot of artists I haven’t seen in a while and a lot that I’d never heard before, but unlucky enough not to be able to make it out to the followig nights which saw performances from White Mystery, John Bellows, Cacaw, Skarekrau Radio, Jerusalem & the Starbaskets, Pooper & Pizza Dog, Narwhalz (of Sound), Andy Ortmann, and a secret performance by Lightnighg Bolt (tip: next time you see the name Turdthrower on a bill, fucking GO!)
